Going Home

As I write this I am surrounded by empty moving boxes and mementos of my years of ministry here in Bella Vista. Much more quickly than I ever imagined my time here as minister of Forest Hills Church is coming to an end. The reasons for leaving aren’t the usual reasons, but to answer a call from God to go home and help family. My Dad who is 79 is battling lung cancer. My Mom is there for him and my sisters who live nearby are also helping out, but my heart is torn between being with him during his last days. None of us can even try to guess how long that may be and serving 958 miles away makes being with them on a regular basis an impossibility. So we are going home. I will be stepping out of ministry for a little while to be a daughter and caregiver which is a very high calling.

Sadly for some home may not be a place that you want to go back to. Home may be a place of sad memories. For some going home is not an option because the physical place or the people we connect with home no longer exists. But, home for me is a warm, loving and happy place. So with a heavy heart for the friends and colleagues I’ve come to love here I say goodbye.

Home also reminds me that as a believer in Jesus Christ there is another home that comes to my mind. That is the eternal home that God has prepared for us with him. The Psalmist tells us about it in the familiar Psalm 23. “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” When the earthly home is no more and our lives have come to an end, God has invited those who believe in His Son Jesus to dwell in His house for all eternity. What a blessing. What a hopeful assurance that we keep always in the forefront of our faith. It is the true home all believers long for.

The apostle John recorded Jesus’ words of assurance, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms, if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:1-3) What a comforting promise we have as believers that God has a room reserved for us in His house. The scriptures also tell us that in heaven there will be no need for a sun and moon because the light of the Father will be our light. There will also be no more sickness and no more pain there. What a comforting assurance that is as well.

My closing words to you are a reminder of a wonderful, beautiful and happy home God is preparing for you. The question is, will you realize it? Will you dwell in the house of the Lord forever? The Scriptures tell us that Jesus is the only way to the Father. In the following verses of the ones previously mentioned, one of the disciples said to Jesus, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way? Jesus answered him with, “I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:5,6) Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will find salvation, forgiveness and a room in the great house of God.

My prayer is that one day I will see you all again in that beautiful place God has prepared for us. What a great homecoming that will be!! Thank you for allowing me to share my faith thoughts with you, May the Lord bless you and keep you. Pray hard and keep the faith until we meet again, Pastor Sue Metcalf
